It’s a special day in Korea. Idols make it an extra special one.
Chuseok is finally here, you know what that means!?! Time to go pay a visit to your hometowns, folks. Aside from that though, it’s time for your favorite idols to get together and entertain. SBS Big Idol Show set the stage on October 3rd for a lot of noteworthy performances.
4minute, 2NE1, 2AM, After School, Big Bang (minus Dae-sung), Girls Generation, KARA, and Lee Seung-gi were all the idols that were in attendance.
I’m gonna run down some of the highlights, but for all you hardcore fans, to watch the program in its ENTIRE hour and a half (approximately),proceed here~
As the second most promising rookies, 4minute came out strong. Cube Entertainment is squandering all their potential by putting SO much spotlight on Hyun-ah. Hyun-ah is definitely growing on me, but at the same time rubbing me the wrong way. There is no denying she has the most spark and performance capability, but she is getting overexposed (in more ways than one). Personally find this a really good dance break, while at the same time quite disturbed at how well 17 year old Hyun-ah can dance so provocatively and everyone is just fine with it.
KARA also provides another noteworthy dance break. Despite their young age, Nicole and Goo Ha-ra were a good choice for sultry and sexy dancers because they definitely have the look for it, but the hip hop dancing was just a bad choice overall. This just proves that KARA can’t be “hard.” Ji-young, darling, just finish putting on your sweatshirt and go sing a cute song.
I am super looking forward to 2AM returning to the spotlight. Their 2PMbrothers may have gotten all the stage charisma genes, but 2AM know how to entertain. Not only can they sing balladry emoting loads of emotions, these boys can act downright foolish and still come off as absolute professionals somehow. Transitioning from bossanova to trot, then donning their “Dirty Eyed Girls” personas, 2AM take looking ridiculous and sounding good very seriously.
The party isn’t complete without some 2NE1 and G-Dragon action. Aside from some hot performances, the two YG commodities hit the studios to bring you an unplugged version of “I Don’t Care“. The song in its original version sounds fine already, but the unplugged version garners a whole new level of appreciation.
The press made a big ol’ deal about Girls Generation performing “Into The New World” for the first time in two years, but I could really give a flying hoot about that. SNSD delivered as usual with that song and their mind numbingly infectious “Gee“. What I want to highlight is their dance break with resident dancers Soo-young, Yu-ri, and of course, Hyo-yeon. It’s not the most innovative dance performance I’ve ever seen, but the good thing about these three is that they don’t need to dress all flashy or “gangsta” for me to know they bring it, I can see it in their faces and their movements. Take some notes, KARA.
G-Dragon wore a very interesting jacket for his “Breathe” performance with the iconic Murakami smiley flowers, but the performance itself isn’t interesting enough to highlight. Although, G-Dragon did perform with 2NE1’s Da-ra in “Hello“. Who doesn’t love their little YG chemistry?
2NE1 performed Big Bang’s “Last Farewell” with almost equal charisma, but who cares about a cover when you got the real Big Bang in the house?
Happy Chuseok everybody~!
